Adif has awarded the JV formed by SANJOSE Constructora, Alstom and Indra a contract valued at 64 million euros for the installation of Protection and Safety Systems in the 12 tunnels that comprise the Pajares Bypass.

This 49 km section, which joins the municipalities of La Robla (León) and Pola de Lena (Asturias), is part of the future Madrid - Asturias High Speed Line (LAV- “Linea de Alta Velocidad”), which will substantially improve the railway connection between Castilla and the North of Spain. The project includes, among others, the 25 km Pajares twin tube tunnel and the second longest railway tunnel in Spain.

By virtue of this contract, the JV will supply the Safety systems for the 12 tunnels, including the energy and lighting systems of the Fire Fighting Points and exterior booths, fire detection and extinction, communications and control, sensorisation, ventilation, emergency signalling and auxiliary civil works, as well as the integration of the entire system in the remote control centre (SCADA).

SANJOSE Constructora has executed various sections of the main high-speed lines in Spain (Madrid - Zaragoza - Barcelona - French Border, Madrid - Valencia, Madrid - Galicia, Madrid - Asturias, etc.), highlighting the Contreras - Villargordo del Cabriel, one of the most unique in Spain (85% of the route is made up of 3 tunnels and 3 viaducts, among them the Contreras one, which with its 261 metre span, is the largest concrete railway arch in Europe and the absolute record of Spain). The works were awarded several prizes, highlighting a Special Mention and the Puente de Alcántara International Prize in its 11th edition for “bringing together unique and singular characteristics that make it one of the greatest civil engineering works in recent times, as well as the use of new execution techniques, the purity of the lines of the structure and the beauty and integration in the landscape ”.

Pajares Bypass

The Pajares Bypass, 49 km long, will optimise high-speed traffic between León and Asturias, providing the best service to citizens, companies and railway operators. It will reduce the travel time on the Madrid-Valladolid-León-Oviedo / Gijón route and will favour the railway connection with the Asturian ports; It will increase capacity and regularity, by having a double track throughout the section; and it will increase comfort by establishing optimal running conditions.
